5 Tips for a successful long-distance relationship

Whether you met a beautiful Italian during your last vacation in Rome, a Swedish during your school exchange year in Stockholm, or simply that your boyfriend has moved from Marseille to Lille, it is more and more common to have couples who live their love from a distance. Even if this is often not ideal, your relationship is not doomed to failure. If hundreds or thousands of miles separate you from your girlfriend here is a list of 5 tips to make this relationship work.

1. SET THE RULES FROM THE START

Agree early on that the two of you will stick with each other, how often you visit, and how often you call. Try to see how your future will be.

2. CLEARLY DEFINE THE FUTURE OF THE RELATIONSHIP

In order for the relationship to work for you both, it is important that there is a silver lining at the end. If you don’t see how you can one day live together close, then you will never find the morale to face this kind of relationship. If you know that this long-distance love is only temporary and that within a year you will be able to see each other as much as you want then you can make this relationship successful.

3. DON’T COMMUNICATE TOO OFTEN

Many experts advise not to call your other half every day. After a while, you won’t have anything of interest to say to yourself, and a kind of weariness will appear.
Rather, it is advisable to call each other only once a week for a period of just over an hour. That way you’ll be excited all week and look forward to the call. You will also have more to share.

4. ALTERNATE VISITS

If you have the possibility of taking the plane or the train to visit you, then think of alternating well the one who will join the other. Or else choose a meeting place at an equal distance from your two respective cities. Otherwise, it creates an unfair relationship, with one of you making every effort for your relationship.

5. LEARN TO TRUST

Not being able to always know what your boyfriend or girlfriend is doing can create a lot of stress.
But you’re going to have to live with it if you want your long-distance love to work. You will have to learn to trust him. If you are naturally jealous, do not hesitate to tell him about your doubts and he will know how to reassure you.
